Autumn tips

Hedge & Shrub Tips

General guidance on when and how to prune — always check for nesting birds before cutting back any hedge or shrub.

Give evergreen hedges a tidy-up cut

A light trim in early autumn keeps evergreen hedges neat over winter without stimulating vulnerable soft new growth before the cold arrives.

Plant new hedging while the soil is still warm

Autumn soil retains summer warmth and moisture, giving new hedge plants the best possible start before winter dormancy.

Reduce hedge height before winter winds arrive

Taking height off a tall hedge in autumn reduces the wind load it carries through winter storms, lowering the risk of it splitting or leaning.

Clear cuttings before they smother nearby plants

Hedge trimmings left on borders after an autumn cut can smother low-growing plants and encourage slugs over winter if they're not cleared away.

Good to know

Hedge Trimming & Pruning — your questions

When is the best time to trim hedges?

It varies by species, but most benefit from trimming in spring and late summer. We advise on the right timing for your hedges.

Do you take the cuttings away?

Yes — all clippings are cleared and removed, leaving your garden spotless.

Can you cut very tall hedges?

Yes. We are equipped to safely trim tall and large hedges, working to a precise finish.

Is it true you can't cut hedges when birds are nesting?

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it's an offence to damage or destroy an active nest whatever time of year that happens — in practice, most professionals treat March to August as the main risk period and check a hedge carefully before cutting back during those months.

Can my neighbour make me cut back a hedge that’s too tall?

In England and Wales, councils can act on complaints about evergreen or semi-evergreen hedges over two metres that are blocking light, under what's usually called the 'high hedges' rules. It rarely comes to that in practice, and keeping a hedge at a sensible height with regular trims avoids the issue altogether.
