Autumn tips

Garden Clearance Tips

Simple advice for keeping on top of green waste and overgrowth before it becomes a bigger job.

Remove spent annuals and dead growth

Clearing out finished summer bedding and dying-back growth reduces slug and disease habitat and tidies the garden for winter.

Clear leaves from drains and gutters

Autumn leaf fall is the single biggest cause of blocked garden drains — clearing them as they fall prevents standing water problems.

Cut back herbaceous perennials that have died back

Once foliage has properly browned off, cutting collapsed stems to ground level tidies borders and removes cover where slugs and snails overwinter.

Clear paths and lawns of leaf litter weekly

A thick, wet layer of fallen leaves left on grass blocks light and encourages moss and fungal disease underneath within a couple of weeks.

Good to know

Garden Clearance — your questions

Do you remove the waste?

Yes — all green waste and cleared material is taken away and responsibly disposed of as part of the clearance.

How quickly can you clear a garden?

Most residential clearances are completed in a single day, though larger or very overgrown gardens may take longer.

Can you start a landscaping project after?

Yes. Many of our clearances lead straight into turfing, planting or full landscaping work.

Can I just burn the garden waste myself?

You can, but bonfires that create excessive smoke can count as a statutory nuisance if they affect neighbours, and green waste burns poorly when it's fresh and full of sap. It's usually simpler, and kinder to those nearby, to have it taken away and disposed of properly.

What if you find Japanese knotweed or another invasive plant during a clearance?

We'll flag it rather than treat it as ordinary green waste. Japanese knotweed is classed as controlled waste and has to be disposed of by a licensed carrier at a permitted site, so it needs identifying properly and dealt with the right way, not bagged up with everything else.
