Autumn tips

Planting & Lawn Care Tips

Advice for the softer side of a garden — lawns, borders and planting areas — through the changing seasons.

Reseed bare or thin patches

Cooler, damper autumn conditions are ideal for overseeding a lawn — grass seed germinates reliably without the risk of scorching.

Divide overcrowded perennials

Lifting and dividing congested clumps in autumn gives them room to establish before next year’s growth, and is an easy way to fill gaps elsewhere.

Lay new turf while the soil is still warm

Autumn's warm soil and reliable rain give new turf the best possible conditions to root in before winter dormancy sets in.

Cut back summer perennials once they've finished

Cutting spent perennials back once flowering has properly finished tidies borders and reduces the places pests and diseases can overwinter.

Good to know

Soft Landscaping — your questions

Do you design the planting plan?

Yes — we work with you to design a scheme that suits your space, soil and how much time you want to spend on it.

How long does a landscaping project take?

It depends on scale, but most soft landscaping projects take between a few days and two weeks on site.

Can you maintain it afterwards?

Absolutely — many clients pair their new landscaping with a regular maintenance plan so it keeps looking its best.

How long before new turf can be walked on normally?

Generally around four to six weeks, once the roots have properly knitted into the soil beneath. We'll let you know a realistic timeframe for your specific garden and the time of year it's laid.

What's the difference between soft and hard landscaping?

Soft landscaping covers the living elements of a garden — lawns, planting, borders and soil — while hard landscaping means the built parts, like paving, decking and walls. Most projects need a bit of both, and soft landscaping is where we focus.
